Insight
When It Clicked
While refining the Note to Self-Destruct prototype, something clicked. What felt like control through disappearing information could actually create anxiety for someone living with memory loss. The idea shifted in a new direction, from making things vanish to creating something that sticks, that revelation evolved into Echo Cord.
Visual Over Verbal • Recognition at a Glance • Simplicity in Action

Visual Language
A Language You Can See
Echo Cord replaces written instructions with a visual system that can be understood at a glance. Colors, shapes, and familiar cues work together to communicate what to do without relying on reading or memory. Over time, this creates a consistent language that feels natural and easy to follow.
Visual Communication · Recognition at a Glance · Consistency Builds Trust

The same predictable visual language, no matter how it’s written.
Complex input becomes a calm, familiar system the patient can recognize at a glance.

Ecosystem
The Tethered Connection
While the experience on the tablet stays simple and steady, a connected system works quietly in the background. Caregivers can update routines in real time, and those updates appear instantly in a familiar, predictable format. The complexity stays behind the scenes, so the experience remains clear and calm.
Caregiver to Patient · Real-Time Sync · Invisible Complexity

Simple on the surface. Connected behind the scenes.

Reflection
The Continuous Echo
Echo Cord started as something else entirely. I was building Note to Self-Destruct, focused on the privacy of disappearing data. But while designing for things to vanish, I realized I was solving for a luxury, not a necessity.
For someone living with memory loss, vanishing is not a feature, it is a failure. That shift from erasure to persistence changed how I think about design. It taught me that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is not create something new, but make sure the most important things stay.
From Vanish to Echo · Intentional Friction · The Long-Term View
The Hard Part
The biggest challenge was restraint. In UX, we are often taught to add, refine, and enhance. Here, clarity came from removing. Designing less, while still making it understandable, was the most difficult and most important decision.
The Responsibility
Designing for this audience carries weight. These are users who cannot always troubleshoot or opt out when something fails. That responsibility pushed me to think beyond usability and focus on trust, consistency, and care in every decision.
